Silk Queen & King

NEW FOR 2018 - CROWNING OF THE SILK QUEEN AND KING 2018

To Whom It May Concern:

As it is well known, Macclesfield was the centre of the silk weaving industry in Britain for many years, renowned for the skill of its designers and for its richly patterned woven fabrics. It was an annual tradition introduced back in as early as the 1930’s as a way of promoting the industry. It is believed the tradition died out during the Second World War but The Silk Queen involved the annual coronation of a local mill worker was resurrected briefly in the 1970s and with myself being crowned Silk Queen in the early 2000s.

Due to the fantastic success of the Macclesfield Family Fun Day held in May 2017, hosted at Macclesfield Town Football ground, this year’s Fun Day event committee have decided that this should be the year to once more resurrect the tradition of Silk Queen. Keeping with times, we are wanting to ensure that we are being inclusive of all residents of Macclesfield and therefore will be crowning a Silk Queen, King, Princess and Prince.

We are now looking for nomination for one girl and one boy who you feel should be crowned. We ask that those being nominated show examples of hard work in ensuring grades in school, to have shown improvement in areas noted by yourself, be a model citizen of Macclesfield either through regular volunteer work or exemplar fund raising for worthwhile causes.

The winners will be chosen by members of the committee based upon nominations and chosen people must be able to attend the Family Fun Day. Failure to do so will disqualify them for this years event. The date of the crowning will take place on Sunday 13th May during the Family Fun Day that will be held again at Macclesfield Town Football Ground and those nominated to be Silk Queen, King, Princess and Prince will be chosen by members of the committee based upon nominations. Those who are successful are also expected to attend some neighbouring village fetes to represent Macclesfield.
